Mercer Seminar 2010 - Under the Eye of the Dragon

Various dates and locations

Overview

Over the past decade defined benefit schemes have faced mounting challenges. A serious setback in investment markets in 2002/2003, followed by the more recent global financial crisis means that asset values are lower, in real terms, than ten years ago, while liabilities are continuing to rise due to longer life expectancy. On top of all these challenges is an increasingly demanding regulatory environment, making pension schemes more expensive to run.

With the majority of defined pension schemes now in deficit, trustees and employers must navigate the “perfect storm”.

During this breakfast seminar, under the impartial eye of a particularly fastidious dragon, Gavin Duffy, we will explore the options available to address the current challenges and chart a future course for defined benefit schemes. We will present a number of client case studies to illustrate some of the ways in which schemes can be restructured and risks mitigated. In addition, we will identify emerging trends across our defined benefit client base.
