This year’s edition of Mercer’s European Asset Allocation Survey gathered data from over 800 institutional investor clients across 12 European countries, reflecting total assets of around €1 trillion.
The survey provides a comprehensive overview of investment strategy across the European pension industry and attempts to identify emerging trends in the behaviour of institutional investors. Key findings and considerations for investors:
- The momentum is building for sustainable investment, with a majority of pension schemes now considering ESG risks within their investment portfolios (up from 40% in 2018)
- Institutional investors continue to adapt their investment strategies as an increasing number of plans become cashflow negative
- Investors continue to search for diversification, with average equity allocations reducing year on year, and a corresponding increase in holdings of alternative investments
