European Asset Allocation Survey 2019

This year’s edition of Mercer’s European Asset Allocation Survey gathered data from over 800 institutional investor clients across 12 European countries, reflecting total assets of around €1 trillion.

The survey provides a comprehensive overview of investment strategy across the European pension industry and attempts to identify emerging trends in the behaviour of institutional investors. Kishen Ganatra, European Director of Strategic Research, and Matt Scott, Strategic Research Specialist, provide a summary of the 2019 European Asset Allocation Survey

Key findings and considerations for investors:

  • The momentum is building for sustainable investment, with a majority of pension schemes now considering ESG risks within their investment portfolios (up from 40% in 2018)
  • Institutional investors continue to adapt their investment strategies as an increasing number of plans become cashflow negative
  • Investors continue to search for diversification, with average equity allocations reducing year on year, and a corresponding increase in holdings of alternative investments
